Tympanoplasty in Prishtina — eardrum repair & hearing restoration

Microsurgical closure of perforated eardrums, cure of chronic ear drainage, and reconstruction of middle ear hearing mechanisms.

About the procedure: Tympanoplasty

Tympanoplasty is the microsurgical repair of a perforated tympanic membrane (eardrum) and, when needed, the reconstruction of sound-conducting ossicles. Chronic perforations expose the middle ear to water and bacteria, causing recurrent foul discharge and conductive hearing loss. At Novus ORL, procedures are performed under advanced surgical microscopes using the patient's own natural graft tissue (fascia or perichondrium) for durable, permanent closure.

Clinical indications: when is surgery needed?

  • Persistent tympanic membrane perforation failing to close after 2–3 months
  • Recurrent ear discharge following water exposure during bathing or swimming
  • Conductive hearing loss caused by eardrum defect or ossicular discontinuity
  • Chronic otitis media without cholesteatoma requiring middle ear sanitization
  • Desire to swim and shower freely without fear of ear infection

Key patient benefits & outcomes

  • High anatomical closure success rate exceeding 90–95%
  • Substantial hearing threshold gain and acoustic clarity
  • Definitive end to recurrent ear infections and discharge
  • Water freedom and swim confidence once fully healed

Surgical procedure step-by-step

1. Audiometric & microscopic exam

High-magnification ear inspection, pure-tone audiometry, and tympanometry to quantify hearing loss.

2. Microsurgical approach

Conducted transcanally through the ear canal or via a hidden incision behind the ear.

3. Natural autologous graft placement

Harvesting a micro-thin piece of fascia or perichondrium placed as an underlay framework.

4. Resorbable support packing

Placement of biodegradable gelatin sponge to support the graft during natural epithelialization.

Post-operative recovery timeline

1

Days 1 – 3

Mild discomfort easily managed with over-the-counter analgesics. Muffled hearing due to ear packing.

2

Weeks 1 – 2

Strict water protection with petroleum jelly cotton during showering. External dressing removal at clinic.

3

Weeks 4 – 6

Dissolution of internal packing, full graft integration, and noticeable hearing improvement.

4

Months 2 – 3

Follow-up audiogram confirming hearing gain and clearance for swimming.

Frequently asked clinical questions

In the vast majority of cases, closing the eardrum and stabilizing ossicles significantly restores conductive hearing loss and eliminates acoustic dampening.
